Apple Cider Vinegar for Hair Loss, Who Would Have Thought! I was never good at typing out titles for my posts, but those words right there just about spell out how I feel right now, even after a couple of weeks of seeing for myself the wonders of my holy grail of hair loss, my ever persistent hair issue. Yes, I’ve tried a bunch of hair loss shampoos including Phytocyane by Phyto Paris and Human Nature’s Strengthening Shampoo and Conditioner. With Phytocyane, my hair loss became worse and as for Human Nature, no improvement at all. But the latter was not put to waste since both my boys are now using SLS free toiletries as well. Yay!

My discovery of Apple Cider Vinegar being an effective hair loss remedy came by chance. I have been suffering from some form of acid reflux since last month. I cannot seem to take in anything without feeling nauseated. I have been eating small portions of food frequently since. Because I wanted to steer clear of having to go visit the doctor and be given tons of synthetic medications and antibiotics, I just thought I’d do my homework by searching for a natural way to cure my tummy issues. Apple cider vinegar or ACV as health forum people would have it, came up more than once. It kind of did not make sense to me at first since my issue is leaning towards hyperacidity and the cure for it is to treat it with another kind of acid? I know! My exact thoughts! But then again, it has been working and has kept me out of the doctor’s clinic.

I digress, I know. But I think that little backgrounder was necessary for me to let you lovely people know how I found out about this wonderful discovery. Another affirmation that the internet is more than just for people who are into free online dating. Aside from ACV treating a whole bunch of illnesses, aside from my acid reflux problem, I also learned from a friend that swears by it who had a grandmother lived till 104 years old! Meanwhile, as I read through ACV forums, I also found out that it is also an effective remedy for hair loss. I squirmed at the thought at first of having to bathe my hair with vinegar. Repulsive, I know! I tried it once, I did not last the whole 15 minute recommended time of keeping it in soaked in a hair cap. But I was amazed enough that as I washed the ACV off my hair, my locks felt so smooth and dried out really shiny. And those are not even the benefits that I was looking for!

After doing the Apple Cider Vinegar treatment for hair loss for two weeks now, I am happy to report that from approximately 30 strands of hair in the tub every bath, I can only see less than ten! And it has been two weeks since I last pulled out a huge clump of hair from my hair brush. I know I’ve got to get them cleaned anyway. Haha!

I use Bragg’s Apple Cider Vinegar. Although we have at least 4 bottles of ACV on our cupboard supplied by Heinz, I learned that raw and unfiltered, the one with “the mother” is best. I finally got hold of one from Healthy Options in Bonifacio Highstreet. But I also saw that it was also available in SM Supermarkets for five bucks less. As what I have gathered from the forums and what I’ve been doing the last couple of weeks. I do the ACV treatment once a week.

1. Pour one tablespoon of Apple Cider Vinegar on a cup of distilled water (shake the bottle first before pouring).
2. Pour the mixed solution of ACV and water to clean and shampooed hair.
3. Put a shower cap over hair.
4. Wait 15 minutes.
5. Rinse with warm water.

The first time I did the ACV treatment on my hair, I immediately shampooed my hair again after rinsing. I was too afraid the vinegar smell will stick. But the following week, I just rinsed my hair until the smell comes off. I think it is safe say that rinsing will be enough since there was no violent reaction from the hubby when we went to bed that night. Haha! And did I mention that my hair looks really shiny whenever I have this done? I think the ACV’s cleansing and clarifying properties are doing this to my hair and I’m really loving it! To think that I was already getting frustrated since my Keratin treated hair was starting to get out of sorts.

It’s just amazing how these all natural beauty treatments are made available to us straight from our cupboards. And who would have thought that the Apple Cider Vinegar have such lovely benefits!

It was more than a month ago when I decided to have my hair undergo Keratin Smoothing Treatment or what is more commonly called nowadays as Brazilian or Express Blow Out or Permanent Blow Dry at Henri Calayag Salon.

Before the treatment

As what I would usually do with my previous reviews, I had to sit this Keratin Smoothing Treatment out for a month at least just so I know I will be providing an accurate review. This was a birthday treat for my brittle and unmanageable hair.

My visit to Henri Calayag prior to this, I was told several times over by Richard (Junior Creative Director-above photo) how dead my hair was and there is no way on earth it can survive another rebonding treatment and not fall off on me. Digital Perming is also out of the question. No more harmful chemicals from there on out. All I really needed was sort of revive my hair back to “normal” and I was willing to try anything. I have had badly damaged hair for as long as I can remember and brushing has been a chore if not for the anti-frizz serums that I used.

The Permanent Blow Dry/Brazilian Blow Out/Express Blow Out procedure was way simpler than that of rebonding.

1. My hair was shampooed with Coppola Keratin Complex Smoothing Therapy Clarifying Shampoo twice.

2. Hair was blown dry 100%.

3. Coppola Hair Treatment Solution was applied all over my hair.

4. Hair was covered for 20 minutes.

5. Blown dry 100%.

6. A special flat iron was used to go through sectioned parts of my hair.

After the treatment

Then that was it! Probably took, give or take, an hour and a half. There are after care instructions that I have to take note of though.

1. Do not wash hair for 3 days or 72 hours.

2. Avoid getting any moisture in the hair.

3. If hair gets wet, blow dry immediately.

4. Wear hair down. No pins, clips, pony tails or sun glasses to hold back hair.

5. Wash only with Keratin Complex Therapy Shampoo and Conditioner.

This is why I recently gave away my Schwarzkopf Zero Frizz Shampoo and Conditioner. Only sulfate free hair care products for me. My hair has since been way softer and I can actually brush my fingers through it without hitch. Something I have not done in a very, very long time.

I actually had my doubts initially since I have also read some reviews about these kinds of treatment contain harsh chemicals like formalin. I have read that Coppola Smoothing Treatment is formaldehyde free. It’s scary how stuff used for aesthetics nowadays are laden with chemicals that technically belong to a composter. When I read this review about a girl who had Brazilian Blow Out done (used another brand) and her hair went falling off from the third day after the treatment – when she shampooed her hair. That did not happen to me, so that was a relief.

Coppola Keratin Complex Smoothing Therapy Shampoo and Conditioner, P980 each

Richard told me that this treatment should last me around five months. For my hair length, the salon’s published rate is P9,000 but I got a discount, I only paid P6,500 for the treatment and an additional P1,980 for the Coppola Shampoo and Conditioner. Yes, some birthday treat. At least my hair got to happily breathe after a long while of being so brittle and badly damaged.

And what do you know, I got to score a photo op with Henri Calayag himself! Henri Calayag has a team of excellent staff – from Roselle who assisted Richard, Verna who did my nails and Richard himself. What I love about this Keratin Smoothing Treatment is that I can actually make a bun of my hair and it is in no danger of taking a certain awkward shape as it would if it was rebonded or straightened. It comes right back after shampoo. The Coppola Keratin Smoothing Treatment is not exactly the cheapest procedure but it is something to consider if your hair is as badly damaged as how mine used to be.

Sorry for the wait, it is a lazy Monday morning! I have finally raffled via random.org all 114 entries submitted for Kikay Corner’s Zero Frizz 100% Rescue by Schwarzkopf Giveaway. Every joiner was automatically assigned a number by virtue of the chronological order their respective comments came in.

Here is what the winner of this raffle will receive in the next couple of days – Zero Frizz 100% Shampoo and Conditioner by Schwarzkopf!

Dear winner, kindly email me via jenaspacio (at) gmail (dot) com your Full Name, Shipping Address with Zip Code, Mobile Number and a Scanned ID.

I entered the numbers 1 and 115 on the boxes although there were only 114 entries because #87 is not an entry but a pingback from another site. Just so you guys will know from here on out how Kikay Corner will hold its future contests. It is way easier this way than having to jot down all your names. And random.org has, by far, been pretty reputation when it comes to generating true randomness.

I only click the generate button once in every single giveaway I do. This is, I believe, the only fair way to do it. Unless random.org picks out a number that is assigned to a pingback link, which has never happened yet to date.

Random.org picked out #32 and if you will check who that is from the comment thread of the contest post, you will know who won!

Congratulations, Elinor Semira!

I believe you were also the winner of the baby wear raffle I gave out via Marriage and Beyond some months back. Congratulations again! And thank you to everyone who joined. I’m launching another contest real soon. I will have to decide which from my beauty loot I will give away this time.

As promised, I’m giving away a Shampoo & Conditioner set of my favorite Zero Frizz 100% Rescue by Schwarzkopf to one of my readers. I started using this brand March of this year and really had no plans of switching to another brand (which explains the hoarding) when my favorite hairdresser, Richard of Henri Calayag Salon forbade me to use anything on my hair that has sulfate since I had my Keratin Treatment (Permanent Blow Dry) done late last month. I still have yet to blog about that, I know. I usually wait out a month or so before I blog about any treatment just to be sure I’m providing my readers a more accurate review.

I always bring this Zero Frizz 100% Rescue tandem with me wherever I go. My hair just go berserk on hotel shampoo & conditioner. These Zero Frizz products are just the best shampoo and conditioner I have used ever! And no, that’s not something I picked out from a commercial. I am a very practical woman, so when my SIL called to tell us that Rustan’s is having an employee sale, we really took advantage.

Since March this year, I still have quite a few bottles in my toiletries closet. Maybe I am hoping that before they expire (2013), I can still switch right back somehow. I am not exactly loving the scent of My sulfate-free Coppola tandem I replaced my Zero Frizz with. But since I am just not about to throw away the benefits of having better hair with the Keratin Treatment done on me by using sulfate-laden hair stuff, I just might raffle off the rest in my next giveaways. I know, I have to make up my mind.

Without further ado, here are what my lucky reader will receive next week – Zero Frizz 100% Rescue Shampoo & Conditioner by Schwarzkopf. Both are at least P600 worth. Here’s my review of these products – My Hair’s New Love: Zero Frizz 100% Rescue. To keep things simple, mechanics will be just like my previous giveaway.

My overly fried tresses finally got the snipping that they needed at Henri Calayag Salon last Wednesday. Good thing I was finally able to squeeze that in my schedule. Even the L’Oreal Power Dose treatment I had done a couple of weeks back at another salon barely did anything to my hair. I just got really tired of not being able to brush down to the ends because of the stubborn split ends. Yes, my hair is that bad! If it was not for the L’Oreal Nature Anti Frizz serum which I use interchangeably with Citre Shine No Frizz serum, on a daily basis, my hair would never look half presentable.

So early last Wednesday, I called up Henri Calayag Salon for an appointment later that day. I asked for a Senior stylist. Since I was told that Henri is not around for the day. I wouldn’t want a mistake done on my already damaged hair. Henri’s next man being, Richard, who I was told was the salon’s Junior Creative Director. He, as I understand, comes next to Henri.

As expected, I got the affirmation that my hair is in really bad shape and I should forget about rebonding altogether. I assured Richard that never again will I have that done. I’ve seen enough how bad my hair turned out. He would not even recommend digital perming even in the near future. All I wanted was to get my hair restored. So I was told to come back after a few weeks (since I just had power dose treatment done recently) for a round of Kerastase treatment. Then, if I was at all to consider another treatment, it should be no more than a Keratin Complex Smoothing Therapy which is better known as Permanent Blow Dry. I remember almost purchasing that deal in one of those group buying sites. But had second thoughts because it was gonna be done in a salon that I have never heard of. Since my issue is just to have manageable hair, ideally, the wash and wear kind, I think this is it for me. The rebonding tends to flat out the hair and is not exactly my favorite. Poor alternative for my rather out of sorts naturally wavy hair. Richard emphasized a few more times never to get my hair rebonded again. Else, I might just find my hair falling out altogether. Yikes!

When I went to sit on the chair, all I remember telling Richard was I need to get my hair restored and get rid of split ends. I appreciate that he was honest to tell me what I need to hear and also did not push on getting any hair treatment done (for now). Another salon would have gotten me to do a treatment or two just to sell another service for profit. This man definitely knows what he’s doing. I can have the treatment done in a few weeks instead. And in three months or so I can come back for the Permanent Blow Dry treatment, which is basically hitting two birds in one stone. Apparently, this Keratin Complex Smoothing Therapy by Coppola encases the hair follicle with a keritinous bond to promote healing, block the effects of humidity and prevent environmental toxins from entering the hair.

The classy lady beside me even vouched for Richard to the high heavens. Saying that she’s been with him since his Tony and Guy days. She’s been to other salons like Louis Phillip Kee. But was never as satisfied as she is with Richard. That basically got me sold. I’m totally getting Richard to officially get my hair restored back to health. I also love that the salon is WiFi zone too. That’s always a plus for me. I can check on my work email and browse through random articles from news, beauty, even stuff about trailer hitches that I need to work on. And yes, check in via Foursquare too and play my online games! The hour and a half just flew me by.

Although that hair snipping did not exactly turn my damaged hair to the best of health, I now have hope that I’m towards the road to recovery. I can’t believe I have stalled way too long to visit Henri Calayag Salon. Did I mention that they have the best service of all? Henri, who came later that day, even had me escorted to Greenbelt 2 by one of his staff because it was drizzling outside. I told them it was okay, but he insisted. I was happy that I did not have to say goodbye to my perfect, just-stepped-out-of-the-salon hair all too soon. That extra service was really sweet. I am surely going back to have my hair treatment done. Then later, have that Permanent Blow Dry too.

In all of my years of being active in social media networks, Twitter is the one platform that I don’t find very friendly. I have had my Twitter account for years but have only been visible on Plurk 99% of the time that I’m “social networking”. That was, until last week when I had to figure out my way on Twitter because I cannot miss a convo with my dear friend, Michelle. Yes, that’s you xoxo Mrs. Martinez! I was busy figuring out what the best Twitter App for iPhone was when I chanced upon a tweet in my timeline. Divasoria featured one of the blogs I followed for a time, Tina Tagle’s blog. Her blog is now MIA. I also chanced upon her blog via a link shared by a friend on Plurk a few months ago. Social Networks rock, eh?! And now I have Twitter, Divasoria and Tina Tagle to thank my new mane for.

I was willing to try anything to save me from my everyday, bad hair day predicament, so when Tina Tagle shared with Divasoria about Zero Frizz Shampoo and Conditioner and how she swears by it, I knew that was my next purchase when I hit Rustan’s. My locks are making me crazy as it is and trying anything, I was willing to do. Six months since I had it rebonded and already officially out of sorts! It’s practically bad hair day for me more than half the time – until this! I’d have to say, Schwarzkoph (whoa! That was a challenge to spell) should pay Tina Tagle some commission of sorts for the reco for I’m sure ladies will follow suit. That is if they can at all afford her. Teehee!

As per habit, I will have to post another review in a month or two. I have learned that with shampoos and conditioners, they have this tendency to be good during the first week or so. It isn’t as easy as doing tv reviews. Great first impressions of shampoos come about possibly because of the clarifying effect of changing brands. This is especially true when your hair has been heavy with build up from your current shampoo. This is also why even experts suggest changing shampoos from time to time. But for now, I am so loving Schwarzkoph’s Zero Frizz with my hair’s each and every rebonded strand.

Kikay Corner is on today’s issue of Philippine Star’s Lifestyle, Fashion & Beauty Section - page I-3. Just allow me to be giddy just this once. Kikay Corner per se, was not exactly mentioned in the article. But it was my name right there all right. The reason I made it on the papers is because as the author of Kikay Corner, I was one of the blessed few (Count: 5 bloggers), who had first dibs on Luster by Kolours.

grabbed from Philstar.com‘s webpage

It was to my surprise when a neighbor who was cluelessly looking into an online business degree opportunity from today’s issue of Philippine Star went to our house with the particular page where I’m on it. He said, he had to drop the online business degree search to show my folks the papers. In the article, I was with fellow blogger Lace Llanora, Head Zone managing directors Mirasol Salao and Jean Castor. Head Zone was where Splash (the distributor of Luster by Kolours) chose to have our crowning glories color treated by their first ever No Ammonia, Demi-Permanent Hair Dye. Head Zone is located in Shangri-la Hotel, Mandaluyong.

When I got hold of the invite from Splash (maker of Kolours Luster) some weeks back, I knew I just got to hold off my plan of hitting the salon. My roots were already shouting out loud to get tamed. My two toned head just had to get taken cared of and my brittle ends need to get chopped off as well.

Phote Before the Makeover: on my way to Shangri-la Hotel Mandaluyong. Through and through lifeless hair

I was hopeful that I will love the hair makeover I was getting from Splash – first dibs on their new Demi-Permanent Hair Dye, Luster. And we’re having the makeover done in Head Zone, Shangri-la Hotel by one of their Senior Stylists, no less. How’s that for a motivation for me to hold off my trip to the salon, eh? Thankfully, my EQ worked just fine and I couldn’t be more glad.

Earthlingorgeous.com and moi at Heat in Shangri-la Hotel

I have personally used Kolours since I was in college and I’m pretty happy with every hair dyeing result. I tried the pricier (imported) brands. But being the prudent, budget limited college girl that I was back then, I really would rather spend my money on something that works just fine for a fraction of the cost that I would otherwise pay for if I get the more popular brand.

James, one of Head Zone’s Senior stylist, working his magic on my mane. My ever prominent forehead (which can easily give Tyra Banks a run for her money) can make for a real challenge for any hairdresser.

As opposed to what most people think, a lackluster hair is not an irreversible malady for women. Innovations on beauty and hair care of this generation has allowed for women’s mane to shine in the safest possible way. Nowadays, it does not take people who are qualified to look into medical job listings to figure that out. Splash made sure that they provide what most women of today would rather use – hair friendlier, safe to use, no ammonia hair dye. Now I’m not sure about the recent raves on INOA (Innovation-No Ammonia) that I have heard of lately. But the question that boggles me is if it is so safe, why can’t people have their hair dyed right at their own home? Well, just something from the top of my head. It just makes perfect sense, right? Closer to natural, without the not so good ingredients = safer. Without the ammonia and with the “safer” claim, then all the more it should be made available for patrons to use the product themselves right at their own home.

A week in and I can’t complain. I think my hair is liking Kolours Luster by Splash. I love that this hair dye is so safe that you no longer have to wait 3 to 6 months before you can have your hair colored again. Goodbye to harsh chemicals that usually go with most hair dyes. Kolours Luster is available in Pamper Me Brown (Dark Brown), Adore Me Chestnut (Chestnut Brown) and Delight Me Mahogany (Mahogany). These are now available in SM Department Stores, Watsons and some Mercury Drug outlets for P385.00. Thanks to Splash and Head Zone Salon for my better looking locks.

Elianto is taking 50% off on Natural Therapy Line made in Korea, and Organic Olive hair care line, made with Olive oil from Spain. Facial Foam Wash is now selling from 299 to 150. While shampoos and conditioners are from 399 to 200 only! Invigorate again your skin and hair this new year for a brand new you!

Truth be told, I have not try a single Hair Care product of Elianto and this will be the time that I will maybe grab a hold of one of their organic products. I love things natural and even as I experimented on a few non-organic stuff last year, I resolve to only buy natural stuff from now on. I will surely post reviews and photos using one of my nifty trail cameras while I’m at it.
