How do you choose handbags when you shop?  Do you take your pick in favor of trends, color preference, size or just because instincts dictate that you go grab one? Choosing the kind of handbag can be a challenge sometimes, especially if you want to buy the right one for your body type.

You might be carrying the most expensive bag there is in the universe, but if it does not match your body type, it will totally spell “Fashion Fail” if it will not complement your figure. Keep in mind that big handbags can instantly make you look smaller and tiny ones will make you look bigger.

It should also help to know what you most often carry with you. If you usually just carry, your keys, wallet and a compact flash, you shouldn’t be lugging around with the huge ones. There are a few things one has to consider, like  if the bag matches your body type. Always choose the right size of hand bag for your particular body type. Yes, there is such a thing, ladies. As for handbag shapes, there are a few to choose from:

Baguette – long and rounded shoulder bag resembling that of the bread.
Cigar Box – a small, hard bag.
Clutch – a small, handheld bag or a larger, geometric shape that is tucked under the arm. No strings or handles
Duffle – tall shoulder bag, often with a wider opening on top.
Field – a flap-top shoulder bag with utility-type closure (buckles, snaps, etc). I call this a functional bag.
Hobo – a crescent-shaped shoulder bag.
Kelly – a classic Hermes style named after Grace Kelly. A large handbag with distinctive hardware closures.
Messenger – a.k.a. the mailman’s bag. a large, soft shoulder bag with long straps (often worn across the body)
Pouch – a soft, small bag.
Satchel– a large, handheld bag.
Tote – an open-top bag with straps and/or handles.

With these basic handbag picking tips, you can now know what to look into the next time you go shopping for one.
