Once Upon a Mattress

I might be a little strange, but I actually love having relatives and friends stay over night. I’m just a natural hostess who enjoys cooking for people and taking care of them. The only problem is that my place is a little bit small and we don’t have regular beds for anyone but the kids and my husband and I. Worse, our couch is nice and comfy but for it’s a little bit lumpy for sleeping and not at all right for grandma and the older aunts, uncles, and cousins who come over.

Getting an air mattress was a natural way around that problem, and it’s really worked out great. Of course, then comes the issue of where to put it. The living room can get a bit crowded and it isn’t like it’s just a single person laying out in an ordinary sleeping bag. This thing isn’t small and it’s a real bed when it’s fully inflated.

Even so, it’s worked out really nicely and the relatives love it. The only issues are usually when the kids or the household pets get involved and people suddenly feel furry paws climbing over them in the middle of the night or an inquisitive toddler staring at them early in the morning.

The good part is that our air bed is comfy enough that, after I’ve tired myself out a bit preparing for the incoming guest, I’ll often find myself fighting a very strong temptation to take a brief rest of my own on it. I have to admit that, more often than not, I give in — at least until I hear the pitter-patter of tiny human and/or animal feet nearing my head! For a busy mommy a queen air bed is a great thing to have around the house, but sometimes a magic carpet to take me away from everything would be a whole lot better.
