La Union is great for a family getaway. The beaches are nice, and surfing is always an option. There’s no problem with choosing accommodations, too, since there are a lot of beachfront resorts and hotels in La Union that you can choose from. Personally, there’s only one place, though, that would keep me visiting La Union again and again: Thunderbird Resorts Poro Point .
With so many things to love about Thunderbird Resorts Poro Point in La Union, here’s a wee attempt to list down five (5) things l love about the enchanting Santorini of Asia.
This mediterranean-inspired resort in San Fernando, La Union is perfect in its picturesque majesty.
It’s been five months since my visit but the novelty hasn’t escaped me just yet. With three weeks to go until our 15th anniversary and renewal of vows wedding ceremony, we are yet to find the perfect honeymoon destination and Thunderbird Poro Point is in my list.
1.Distance
Thunderbird Resorts Poro Point is five hours away from Manila. While flying in a farther holiday destination is sweet, truth is the metro has just so many demands that a quick getaway is all that we can afford. This is especially true for us. Primarily why we are considering this on the next long weekend holiday after our renewal of vows wedding.
Thunderbird Resorts is located in VOA Compound, Pennsylvania Avenue, San Fernando City, La Union. If you are coming from Manila, take the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) then drive to Subic-Clark-Tarlac Expressway (SCTEx) and Tarlac-Pangasinan-La Union Expressway (TPLEx). Take the Urdaneta Exit then get on MacArthur Highway and on Pennsylvania Avenue.
The view that welcomed me as soon as I stepped out. Who wouldn’t be impressed?
2. Santorini-Inspired
Did I mention that Thunderbird Resorts Poro Point is Mediterranean-Santorini Inspired? For the least of us who cannot afford to fly to Greece, this is the next best thing.
The resorts structures are painted immaculate white with their iconic blue-colored domes that clones the buildings in Santorini, Greece. The Grecian-design will easily transport you into almost, if not everyone’s dream destination – Greece.
3. Fancy Rooms with complete amenities
The room I shared with fellow blogger Rochelle Rivera, during our overnight stay in June.
From the soft, sink-into-me pillows to the spacious toilet and bath with rainshower system, I just know I want to stay here for a good, long while, if it were up to me.
The veranda
What’s a staycation without a good massage? This is something I always look for when I go on a vacation.

4. Postcard sunsets and breathtaking views
With view this magnificent, I just had to take a selfie. 🙂
During my stay, I swore, I was going to come back with my husband and son the next time I visit. It’s the place where you just got to bring your loved ones to. It is also ideal for your perfect, chill out, “me time.” The city’s noise can be overwhelming sometimes that a getaway is something that we have got to indulge in.
The perfect wedding venue
I’m not surprised that a lot of couples are holding their weddings in Thunderbird Resorts Poro Point. The growing list of couples includes the beach wedding of Actor John Estrada and Beauty Queen Priscilla Meirelles with the West Philippines Sea for their backdrop.
Poro Point Lighthouse
Another shot with the Thunderbird iconic blue-domed structures and the West Philippine sea for my backdrop. I can easily max out my phone’s memory capacity in one go in Thunderbird Resorts, to be honest.
5. Side Trips
Aside from the many beautiful features Thunderbird Poro Point La Union resort has to offer, there are also lovely places you can consider visiting near the resort. Talk about getting the most out of your vacation. Some of them nearby places you can visit are:
- Bacsil Ridge
- Pindangan Ruins
- Poro Point Special Economic and Freeport Zone
- Kasay Marine Sanctuary
- Ma-Cho Temple
- Christ the Redeemer Statue
- La Union Botanical Garden
Although it was a wee bit humid when we visited, the breathtaking views were worth it all. I can only be every so grateful that we’re having our honeymoon on December. I was told it’s cooler during this season in La Union. Even with the heat, Thunderbird Resorts Poro Point remains to be one of my top recommendations for that romantic honeymoon getaway.
