I love soaps. That is if we’re pertaining to the real kind of soap – castile. Since I started making my own soap, I’ve become picky with soaps. Because really, most “commercial soaps” are made primarily of detergent and you won’t want to bathe with that, would you? Aside from that, if it’s not castile, it’s probably boring. That’s just this soaper’s personal thoughts. I also love scrubs. In fact, I never appreciated going to spas unless it comes with a body scrub. So when Sugar Scrub by Amethy sent this tub of bathing essential, I was more than thrilled. I love using coffee grounds for body scrub and this minty flavored one sure looked to me was most fitting for the season. 🙂
Glowcal Marketing Corporation, maker of Sutla Flawless products held their Distributors’ Night last December 21, 2014 at the Marikina Convention Center. As someone who has been a long time user of their products and been reselling them for over a year now, I was invited to celebrate with them.

Soap products come and go, each brand claiming a uniqueness that sets it apart from its competitors, be it an extra ingredient for cleansing or a supposed cutting-edge solution for certain benefits. However, in the end, perhaps the true test of a winner is time, a brand that has lasted for a long time, been relished by many generations, and yet keeps reinventing itself in the process.
Dial is one such brand. The very name itself brings up powerful and poignant images of a soap that has been used consistently by one family member after another, and has come with the best recommendations of parent, sibling, and friend alike. Besides excellence and quality, it is strongly associated with high-grade cleansing that only Dial can deliver, speaking of results that have satisfied – and continue to satisfy – consumers.
Because of the scarcity of liquid castile soaps we have locally, I was stuck for years using Dr. Bronner’s Magic Pure Castile Soaps, which are only available in Healthy Options. Whenever I went to visit Healthy Options, I always secretly wished that a local counterpart will be available. I knew if there were, castile soaps need not be as pricey.
Imagine this soaper’s delight (if you have been following me on Instagram (@jenaspacio) you must have seen that I have been into castile soap making myself), when I was contacted by Casa de Lorenzo, a very local brand, offering to send me their products for me to try out! As much as I would have loved to get into full blast manufacturing my castile soap, mass producing it is not really a priority right now. So learning that castile soap loving people like me actually have options besides Dr. Bronner’s is such a refreshing change.
Only natural ingredients from natural products indigent to the Philippines are added to Casa de Lorenzo Manila Castile Soap. We combined the cleaning power of Virgin Coconut Oil Soap, the Moisturizing properties of Rice Bran Oil Soap and the lathering effect of Palm Oil Soap in one bottle. Added with Essential Oils from plants and flowers natively found in the Philippines, it is a delightful mix to surprise your senses.
But of course, I had to try Casa de Lorenzo for a couple of weeks at least, to be sure if the quality can at least be considered at par. I have used both Lavender and Peppermint variants of Dr. Bronner’s, so when Casa de Lorenzo included a unique variant, they interestingly called, Manila (Calamansi), I just had to try this out first from the batch.
If there is one mall I conveniently frequent every so often it is SM Masinag. The perks of living just across SM can be numerous. Especially the errands I needed to do on a daily basis within the duration of our house expansion project that took more than 3 months! You can very well guess what particular store I am practically go to – Ace Hardware. Yes, I also bought my lighting fixtures at SM Store. It is super convenient, I don’t have to go elsewhere for practically everything I need. 🙂
More than the convenience SM Supermalls bring, what I am particularly delighted about is SM actively participating in efforts like that of the recent Earth Day 2013. After witnessing for myself how SM Supermalls simultaneously celebrated last month’s Earth Hour, I am actually no longer surprised.
When Earth Day officially became an environmental holiday in the Philippines via Presidential Proclamations, SM has taken part on doing its share in influencing people towards national environmental consciousness. After spearheading the use of eco bags from years ago, SM has totally let go of using traditional non-biodegradable plastic bags. Aside from making use of recycled water in their SM toilets. Yes, I started noticing those trivial things from years ago and from then on, SM has earned my respect even as they follow through on their numerous environmental projects.
At first, it was a big issue for me when SM started constructing SM Masinag right across our village. I was all too worried about flood becoming worse. But as it turned out, when SM Masinag was up and erected, I actually noticed floods subsiding a lot faster. I recently learned that underneath SM Masinag is a huge water tank that sucks rainwater and flood. I’m not really sure what innovation they call it. But from what I have heard, it’s a system that collects rainwater and flood. I asked around how big that huge water tank is and it was said to be as big as the whole of SM Masinag and 2 storeys high. The water that SM Masinag collects during flooding is recycled in comfort room flushing, irrigation, cooling towers and grounds maintenance. For someone who has experienced the wrath of Ondoy in 2009, that is really a big deal for me and my family. I just had to mention that since I strongly feel from our very traumatic Ondoy experience, that you can’t get more “earth conscious” than that. Kudos to SM for a job well done! 🙂
As a big fan of organic and all natural stuff, I roamed around the SM Masinag Eco-Fair during this particular Earth Day exhibitor caught my attention. The producers of these all natural and organic products hails from Rizal and have been around for a few years now. The proprietor of these organic stuff also spoke during the opening of Earth Day in SM Masinag. Introducing these all natural products to the general public allows for more people to be aware that there are better alternative products that promotes health better than preservative-laden brands. Above is a shot of essential oils that I also have at home: Eucalyptus, Lemongrass and Citronella.
Malunggay and Kamote Chips, anyone?
If you have been following this blog long enough, you know that I lean towards organic and all natural products. These organic finds – soap and anti-mosquito spray are part of the Eco-Fair exhibit. Here’s hoping that SM will welcome more of these brands soon for its patrons, even beyond Earth Day and these exhibits. 🙂
Earth Day 2013 focused on ECOGOVERNANCE. As this year marks the midterm of Pres. Benigno Aquino III, people are made aware of our progress in the Environmental Performance Index and the total log ban issued by Pres. Aquino at the beginning of his term to the recent concerns on the Tubbataha Reefs and the mining- related incidents. These are only a few of the many matters that make the celebration of Earth Day all the more significant.
Aside from this, 2013 also happens to be the Network’s 15th anniversary. It was in 1999 that Mr. Mark Dubois of Earth Day International visited the Philippines and helped form the Earth Day Network Philippines in the house of the late Odette Alcantara, the founding Country Coordinator. Efforts like this by huge companies like SM has a huge impact in our culture. Kudos to SM Supermalls and here’s looking forward to more of SM’s environment-conscious projects! 😀
For as long as I can remember, I have always been a kikay. Yes, that’s way before I became a mommy. Although responsibilities and chores have piled up hand in hand with motherhood, I believe that mommies should never neglect taking care of themselves. This is when taking care of yourself goes beyond just being vain. You are actually doing it for your loved ones.
A woman is a woman, whether she’s single, a wife, a mother or a grandma. She will always have this innate need to be pampered one way or another. While a handful lot will have to be sacrificed for many mommies, one thing we should always take time to do is to nourish our skin. This, I do with Johnson’s Baby Milk Bath. My initial discovery of Johnson’s Baby Milk was when my son was still a baby. Because it was a staple in his bath time, I thought of using it when my bath soap ran out. I loved how soft my skin was after bath that I hardly need to apply lotion after. And when it comes to applying lotion, I have not always been very religious (but am trying to get into that habit now). This has made Johnson’s Baby Milk Bath my best bath buddy since. 🙂
A good bath after a hard day’s work with Johnson’s Baby Milk Bath is the one thing I look forward to every day. As a work from home mom, my schedule can actually go crazy. Contrary to what people might think how it can be a breeze. It’s a whole different story when you have no helper with you. From doing all my online tasks as a freelance virtual assistant, homeschooling and the house chores, you can just imagine how tired I look at the end of the day – not one bit of a glam thread in me. But that feeling all goes away after every bath. There’s something about soft, well-nourished skin.
One of the items I have a photo of from my first Health Options post was that of Dickinson’s Original Witch Hazel Pore Perfecting Toner. More than a couple of months since I started using it and I think my skin is loving it.
Dickinson’s Witch Hazel Pore Perfecting Toner 2 fl.oz. (59ml) retails for P59 (approx. $1.40)
I have since been using Dickinson’s Witch Hazel Pore Perfecting Toner in place of Nautreal’s Facial Cleanser. The ingredients of the latter being Licorice Extract, Mulberry Extract and Witch Hazel. My skin is finding the former to be friendlier and non-drying. Somehow after a couple of months of using Nautreal Facial Cleanser, I noticed my face becoming drier than usual.
Dickinson’s Witch Hazel Pore Perfecting Toner is non-drying and good for all skin types. It gently cleanses and conditions pores to maintain clear, smooth and balanced skin. What I love best about it is it is 100% All Natural. This toner is designed to:
- refine pores
- remove and control oil
- soothe irritation
- locks in moisture
Directions for use: Use daily after cleansing or before applying skin treatments. Moisten a cotton ball or pad and apply to face and neck. For best results, use in the morning to prepare and evening to repair for naturally soft and beautiful skin.
So I have been frequenting Healthy Options for a while now but I have not really been sharing a lot of my discoveries. For some reason, they have piled up one after the other that I simply just let my laziness to blog get the better of me.
The inspiration now came from my logging in to my Healthy Options account and finding out that I’m 36 points away to being a Gold Card Member! Wooohooohoo!!!! Our family has been getting hold of our organic supplies from Healthy Options for sometime now. I am slowly but surely, transitioning our home to “organic.” As geeky as that may sound, I really would rather not have anything to do with parabens, sls/sles and all those crap. So far, our bathroom is 99% organic. Which is a great start. Oh well, I have been in this “starting” business for years now. But hey, organic stuff aren’t cheap. So there.
A few of my Healthy Options beauty products staples: Dickinson’s Original Witch Hazel, Queen Helene Mint Julep Masque, Dr. Bronner’s Magic Soap 18-in-1 Hemp Lavender Pure Castile made with organic oils, Dessert Essence Jojoba Oil, Alba Botanica Un-Petroleium Plant Powered Lip Care w/ SPF18 Lip Balm in Cherry, Alba Botanica Terra Tints in Bloom SPF8.
As much as I would like to veer away from non-natural toiletries in our bathroom, my more recent trip to Marks & Spencer pulled me to its Bath and Body section. Specifically towards the China Blue Floral Collection.
Admittedly, there are a handful of Marks & Spencer scents that come as a little too matronly for me. Like their Rose collection, for instance. But that’s just me. China Blue did not give any of that hint to my descriminating olfactory sensors. It is my new M&S favorite. The dry down, non overpowering scent works for me.
